Cow Clicker breaks down social games, misses the point

"You get a cow. You can click on it. In six hours, you can click it again. Clicking earns you clicks."

Such is the basic description of Cow Clicker, a new Facebook game that definitely delivers what its title promises -- the ability to click on a cow. Yes, there are a few other social game trappings thrown in there -- you can invite neighbors whose cow clicks count towards your total, and you can purchase prettier cows with in-game "mooney" -- but there's really little besides the titular cow clicking to this simple parody game.

Cow Clicker Creator and Georgia Tech professor Ian Bogost describes Cow Clicker as "Facebook games distilled to their essence" and in a way he's right. Read that description from the first paragraph again. Replace "a cow" with "crops," and "clicks" at the end with "coins" and you have a bare bones description of the basic gameplay in Facebook mega-hit Farmville. The same process can be applied to describe countless other popular social games. Cow Clicker even lets you spend mooney to skip the six-hour wait for more click opportunities, mimicking the way many other social games let you spend in-game money to avoid having to wait for rewards.

But Bogost's simple parody utterly misses the point of social gaming in some major ways. Sure, in strict gameplay terms, there's little to differentiate Cow Clicker from countless popular social games. But for million of players, the appeal of social games isn't in the gameplay, but in the opportunity for world building and role-playing.
Most people don't play Farmville just to mindlessly collect coins. They play so they can build a farm to their exact specifications -- a barn over here, a chicken coop over there, a hay bale picture of Mario over there. They play these social games to escape their dreary work-a-day lives and spend some time constructing simple worlds from scratch, and to share those worlds with like-minded friends. Even text-based games like Mafia Wars build an fantasy world filled with imaginative items and fantastic locations and (arguably) interesting virtual tasks to perform. The coins and the crops and thousands of other gameplay trappings in these games are just a means to an end -- a way to earn more toys for some vibrant virtual dollhouses.

Cow Clicker offers none of these creative opportunities. All it offers is a static picture of a cow. This may seem like a cosmetic difference to some, but I think this difference is key to understanding the popularity of social gaming. Cow Clicker captures the heart of many social games, but not the soul. It mimics the gameplay responsibilities without bothering to copy the social and aesthetic rewards that truly drive most social game players.

Most people play social games to play a role they can't play in real life. In Cow Clicker, the only role to play is that of a person clicking on a cow. What kind of an escape is that?

Pet Society: Ice Cream Stand churns out six kitty-covered summer treats

Pet Society Ice-Cream Stand
Pet Society Ice-Cream Cones and FlavorsDecisions, decisions! These cones look so dee-lish, we can't decide which one to eat first. Thank goodness our pets can't gain weight, otherwise we'd be busting out of our bikinis!

The flavors are:

1. Tropical Ice Cream Cone
2. Ice Cream Cookie
3. Sorbet Cone
4. Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Cone
5. Ice Cream Ultimate
6. Fruity Ice Cream Cone

These cones cost 80 coins from the Ice Cream Stand. If you've got a friend with one, you're in luck. If not, you can buy a stand at the Outdoor or Food shop for 2000 coins. We think for that amount, it should come with a couple of free sundaes.

FarmVille Crafting Buildings Guide

Crafting Buildings is a more complex feature in FarmVille. It utilizes several existing FarmVille features such as Bushels, Farmer's Market, and the usual harvesting and neighbor interactions. If you would like to understand how the Crafting Building will work or for those of you who do not have access to Crafting Buildings yet, you can get a jump start by reading this FarmVille Freak Guide.

NOTE: FarmVille is slowly rolling out this feature for everyone over the next few days. Not everyone will be able to access Crafting Buildings at this point. FarmVille Freak Crafting Building Guide

Previous to their official release, FarmVille and FarmVille Freak referred to Crafting Buildings as "Crafting Cottages". The name was changed to Crafting Buildings upon their release.

Crafting Buildings are accessible to Level 25 Farmers. Level 25 farmers and above will be albe to turn their Bushels into Crafted Goods to use with the Crafting Building.

Upon logging into FarmVille, you will see a pop-up that alerts you that Crafting Buildings have arrived and if you did not participate in the "Crafting Cottage Preview," you will have a new opportunity to pick your building.

Step 1: Pick your profession by choosing the coordinating Crafting Building. You have three choices:

1. The Winery – Make Wine
2. Bakery – Make Baked Goods
3. Spa – Make Perfume

* Each building has its own unique set of recipes you can use to create crafted goods.
* You can view how many of your FarmVille neighbors picked each specific building (as shown below).
FarmVille Choose Bakery, Spa, or Winery
Clicking "What is this" will give you more detailed information on each of the buildings. Once you have decided on your profession, clicking "Yes, Place" allow you to place your Crafting Building on your Farm for free.

For those who have already chosen a Crafting Building by participating in the Preview, you will be prompted with a different pop-up. At this point you will have the chance to change the Crafting Building you initially selected or keep the one you already chose.

Step 2: Placing your Crafting Building on your Farm.

Upon placing your building, you can share a FaceBook newsfeed that will inform your friends of your new business and give them the opportunity to adopt some supplies. The first 5 neighbors who click on this feed within 24 hours will receive 1 of the following items: (Note: Item depends on the Craft you have chosen).

* Baker : Level 10 Triple Berry Pie
* Spa Host: Level 10 Relaxation Candle
* Wine Maker: Level 10 Tropical Wine

Your Buildings Recipe menu will automatically appear after posting the newsfeed notice.
FarmVille Winery Making Goods
Step 3: Making Goods

* Everyone will start with one Level 10 Good that is 1 minute from completion.
* Clicking on "Make a good" will bring you to your recipes menu.
* Your recipe to make a Good will depend on the profession you selected.
* Click "Make it" from the bottom of the menu to create your Good.

Recipes will require you to have Goods. Goods will require you to collect Bushels from your friends, because Bushels are the key ingredients for Goods. Remember, that you can obtain Bushels the following ways:

How to Obtain Bushels:

1. Harvesting your own Bushels from crops you have planted.
2. Visiting your neighbors' Market Stalls.
3. "Adopting" Bushels via the Facebook newsfeed from your friends.

After "Making your Good" it will need time to Cook. Clicking the "Finish it" button will complete the Level 10 Good. It is now ready to use for your Recipe.
FarmVille Winery Finish Making Goods
After completing your Good, you will receive the pop-up below and also have the opportunity to share a newsfeed and give the first three neighbors who click within 24 hours to get 1 type of Good made.
FarmVille Sweet Energy Drink complete
Step 4: Selling Goods

* Clicking on "Goods I am selling" from the crafting menu displays the goods you currently have for sale.
* Selling goods improves existing Recipes and unlocks new ones!
* Each time you sell a good to your Neighbors, you will receive 1 Recipe XP.
* Access your "Sales Report"at the bottom of the menu. This report shows you what Goods you have sold and how many were purchased.
* If neighbors purchased from your store while you were away, a bouncing arrow will appear over your building. Clicking on this will show the following menu:
FarmVille Sales Report
* You earn 90% of the sale price of items sold.
* The Daily Sales Report will display the amount of total coins and experience earned in your absence.

Leveling Your Crafting Building

If you wish to make a successful and thriving business, you must Level-Up your Crafting Building.

* The level of your Building determines the number of crafting spots you have available for use.
* Leveling your building will also unlock new recipes.
* You can level your Building with Farm Cash or coins by unlocking the option.
* To unlock the coin option, you have to level a certain amount of recipes. (See requirements below):

Amount of Recipes Required for Crafting Building

* 1 Star: Level up recipes 6 times + 50,000 coins
* 2 Star: Level up recipes 18 times + 100,000 coins
* 3 Star: Level up recipes 27 times + 400,000 coins
* 4 Star: Level up recipes 36 times + 1,000,000 coins

Recipes are leveled up by fulfilling the requirements above. Basically each time you make a recipe it will count towards your level up progression. Continue making the required Goods your Recipe requires.

* The higher level your Recipe is, the better your crafted Goods will be.
* There is no limit on how high you can level your recipes!
* Currently Crafting Building can only be upgraded to 5 Stars. Once you have a 5 star Building, the buttons to level with coins or cash will disappear.

When you level your Building, you will receive a pop-up below and the opportunity to share a FaceBook newsfeed with your friends that will allow the first three neighbors who click this feed within 24 hours to receive a level 3 crafted good.
FarmVille Blossoming Winery
Step 5: Trading Goods for Rewards:

In addition to selling your crafted Goods to your friends, they can also be traded for rewards. To access Goods that you have in your inventory, click "Use" from the crafting menu and select "Goods".
FarmVille My Goods display menu
This menu displays how many crafted goods you possess.

* You can only have 200 Crafted Goods in your inventory at a time.
* This capacity limit only pertains to your Crafted Goods.
* Your Bushel inventory does not count towards this capacity.

If you click the "use" button underneath a good, you will trade it for fuel.

* The higher the level of the crafted good you use, the more fuel you will get.
* You can see your fuel gauge increase within the inventory menu.
FarmVille My Goods for Fuel
Step 6: Purchase or Sell Goods

You can purchase or sell Goods from your FarmVille neighbors.

You can purchase/sell by visiting your neighbors by two ways:

1. From the Crafting menu, click "Buy". You will then see the option to select "Shop for Goods" or "Shop for Bushels". Clicking "Shop for Goods" will bring up the following menu.
FarmVille Goods
* From this menu, you can select the type of good you would like to purchase.
* Clicking "select" underneath a good triggers another menu that automatically displays the highest level goods for sale first.
* Select the good you want to purchase and you will be brought to the following screen:
FarmVille Friend's Market Shop for Crafts
2. By visiting a neighbors farm.

* Simply click on their Crafting Building to see what they have available for you to buy.
* Upon purchasing an item from your Neighbor's store, you will receive a pop-up allowing you to post a feed to their wall informing them of your actions.
* The first 3 Neighbors to click this feed within 24 hours will receive 1 good of the same type as the one you purchased. (see below)
FarmVille Let Your Friends Know You Bought Goods From Them
* Goods purchased from your Neighbors can also be traded for Fuel.

Deleting Your Crafting Building and Buying a New Crafting Building:

If for some reason you wish to delete your Crafting Building or purchase a new one...

* All progress on the level of the Building and Recipes will be saved.
* You will lose all Goods that are being sold in your store at the time.
* If you wish to purchase a new Crafting Building, it can be purchased from the "Buildings" section of the Market for 100,000 coins, provided it is the same building you initially signed up for.
* If you wish to purchase the two Buildings you did not sign up for, they can be bought for 80 FV$ Farm Cash each.
* You may only own one of each type of Building at a time.

* Facts were sourced directly from the Official FarmVille Forum.

So what do you think? Do you like this new Crafting Building feature in FarmVille? Do you invite new complex features like this or do you find yourself wishing for the simplicity of the beginning FarmVille days?

FrontierVille Varmint Cannons coming soon

FrontierVille is getting ready to make it much easier to clobber bears, snakes and other wild animals that always seem to show up at inopportune times. The weapon of choice? The new Varmint Cannon that, FrontierVille Community Manager MaiLau says " will blast your varmint troubles right off of your frontier with one click!"

The announcement also hints that acquiring one of the cannons will also also require saltpeter, which we first used to create fireworks on the Fourth of July. Saltpeters can be acquired by trading in the Manure Collection, so better start your hunt for that elusive Prairie Pile now.

What do you think about the Varmint Cannon? Do you want one?

Wild Ones accidentally leaks new Penguin, Hedgehog, & Chameleon

wild ones hedgehog     wild one chameleon
Wild Ones has made a rather sizable blunder. Yet this time, fans are pleasantly surprised rather than livid. So what happened? Wild Ones has accidentally released three new pets: the Penguin, Hedgehog, and Chameleon. They were left in the shop for quite a while before Wild Ones scrambled to snatch them back off shelves.

Unfortunately, the accidental nature of the incident has left those who purchased the pets with unpolished warriors. The unfinished animals may suffer from some quirks that will be ironed out when the pets are released upon completion at a later date.

Continue reading to learn about the new pets' special abilities.

While the Wild Ones Hedgehog isn't the tallest warrior on the field, he's certainly one of the most resourceful. His special ability Superspin has him curling up into a ball and zooming around the battlefield. Anything he touches will be damaged and when you see how fast he rolls, you'll understand when I say that the ability has great potential for both movement and carnage.

The Chameleon's probably suffers most harshly as a result of being unfinished. His Tongue Grab move shoots out similarly to a Grappling Hook and latches on to enemies. He is then able to drag them along however he pleases. I suppose this could be useful if your enemy is on the edge of a massive precipice with a stack of mines waiting menacingly at the bottom. In such a case, a simple poke of the Chameleon's Tongue Grab would send them on quite the joyride. Otherwise though, the technique leaves the enemy rather close to you and uses up a turn. Perhaps when the characters are released the Chameleon will be revamped to live up to the dangerous yellow and orange markings he is adorned with. For now, they are merely for show.

The Wild Ones penguin is in a league of its own. He's big, beefy, angry, tough, battle scarred, and most fear-inducing of all: survives on a diet of pure fish. It takes guts to just eat one thing forever, especially when it's fish. I know I couldn't do it, I complain when I have to have pizza or Mexican twice in one day. Not only that, but he is willing to sacrifice some of that precious food with his special ability: Fish Vomit Attack! The baby penguins are going hungry tonight, because Papa Penguin is using his stored food supply not to feed his children, but to murder his enemies with acidic fishy projectile goodness.

We like the diversity of the Wild Ones pet lineup. The Hedgehog, Penguin, and Chameleon along with the newly released Dragon really add a great deal to the Wild Ones animal kingdom.

Wild Ones' new Dragon is a monster! [video]

No literally, he really is. He is a dragon after all.

Wild Ones' latest addition to the lineup finds himself in the same league as other famed monsters such as Jaws, Godzilla, King Kong, and Mary Bale. But like I've stressed with the Wild Ones pets of old, the Wild Ones Dragon may be even more powerful than those famed beasts. How you might ask? Perhaps you have forgotten the laser beams, explosive ordinance, cows, and nuclear warheads in this Dragon's possession. This isn't any ordinary folk-lore dragon, this is a post-modern, bipedal, judo-chopping, commando dragon.

Continue reading to find out how to get one and check out his special ability.

The dragon's special ability is Fire Breath! (Gasp!) While he doesn't have the most original ability for a dragon, it is effective. I know this because I once myself got too close to a fire while roasting a choice marshmallow: ouch. Check it out in the video above.
wild ones dragon
Now comes the customary bad news and money issues. First, you need to be a Wild Ones Member by paying five dollars. Second you have to complete an entire collection of pricey items (pictured above). Only upon obtaining all the items will the dragon be unlocked. Bummer.

Facebook Game Requests: Can't find 'em? We're here to help

Click on the image to make it larger

Click here to see your Facebook Game Requests >

After the changes to gaming announced at last night's Facebook event, some related changes have been implemented in most of Zynga's games. To follow the announcements made last night by the new Games team, the requests sidebar will soon no longer include game requests on your Facebook homepage.

Requests will now be accessed either through your game bookmarks on the left-hand side of your home screen or a link that will appear titled "You Have Game Requests" (pictured above)when you have requests from any of the games you play, according to a post on the Facebook blog. Following the pop-up link will take you to the new "Games" page, where you can accept or reject requests like normal.
Facebook Game Requests
Fortunately, Zynga has made some changes specifically tailored to their games to make things easier for you (in theory). Check behind the cut for more details on these details and how you can cope with the recent changes. Clicking on the bookmark for, say, FarmVille will, just like before, redirect you to the game. But notice Facebook's change to the bookmarks. They now feature a more prominent counter, letting you know exactly how many requests you have in each of your games. Your bookmarked games will always automatically update as you receive requests to let you know when it's time to give or receive gifts and help out your friends.

Cafe World Message Center

After clicking on that bookmark, just click on what looks like a piece of mail on the top right corner of your game screen and the Zynga Message Center will appear for that particular Zynga game. In this example above is the message center for Cafe World.

FrontierVille Gift Page

For Zynga games that don't include the Message Center, like in FrontierVille (pictured above), you'll simply be redirected to the game's gift page. Also, you can still see all of your game requests by typing in this URL into your browser: http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php

All in all, instead of finding your game requests on the right of the screen, they'll appear on the left side within a counter next to each of your bookmarks. Just click on the "You Have Game Requests" message that will appear on your Facebook homepage when you have requests and you're good to go.

However, it seems as if not every change has been implemented just yet. Game requests still appear on the right-hand side of the screen while at the same time popping up in the new "Game Requests" message. Hopefully, this will change soon and everything will be finally streamlined.

lego universe beta
In preparation for this massive release, NetDevil is conducting a closed beta test of Lego Universe. However, because the beta test is closed, it's only available for those who were selected or obtained a beta key. As a result, many people are going to miss out on the early action. But luckily, if you're reading this post, you won't be one of them. We're giving away over fifty Lego Universe beta keys.

Continue reading to find out how to get your exclusive Lego Universe closed beta key.

As you start up Lego Universe, you'll find the Lego world is in crisis! Baron Typhonus and his giant spider control the last essence of pure imagination. Using the power of this imagination, he created a dark force known as the Maelstrom. This evil power converts innocent Lego folk and creatures into dark Stromlings who scour and terrorize the land. Using the remaining imagination, the inhabitants of the world must band together to push back the Maelstrom and Stromling armies to restore harmony to the Lego Universe.

Quite a daunting quest don't you think? Along the way you'll travel to the settings of all your favorite Lego sets. Castles, racetracks, jungles, ninjas; you'll see and do it all! Your building skills will surely come in handy too. You'll get a chance to do all this and more in the Lego Universe beta.
Here's how to win a Lego Universe closed beta key:

1. Sign into Facebook and head to the Games.com fanpage.

2. Make sure to 'Like' Games.com so you can receive all the latest Facebook game news, tips, and more from the blog.

3. Leave a comment on the Games.com Facebook fanpage telling us about your favorite Lego set or Lego creation you built. What did it look like? How long did it take to build? Pictures are definitely welcome!

My personal favorite was a castle set I had. I built it according to the instructions, took it apart and recreated it with stronger walls and better defenses. Then i built an attacking army and staged a massive miniature war! Many good minifigures were lost that day...they will be remembered.

So anyways, easy enough, just click the 'Like' button then post your Lego stories on the fanpage and we'll send you a key and instructions on how to download and play the Lego Universe beta. See you in the beta!

(Don't worry, we don't expect your creations to look this good. The man behind this creation is a professional.)

Michael Jackson MMO coming soon within Entropia Universe

Michael Jackson will soon be immortalized in pixels and polygons (yet again) in Planet Michael, a free-to-play MMO set to launch in 2011 by publisher SEE Virtual Worlds. According to publisher, the game will focus on "Michael's music, his life, and the global issues that concerned him."

Planet Michael will have players "engage in collaborative in-game activities with people worldwide," SEE Virtual Worlds said.

Planet Michael will be one of the first themed planets to be introduced to Swedish developer MindArk's Entropia Universe, which was also published by SEE Virtual Worlds. Entropia Universe is a sci-fi, 3D virtual environment featuring several planets that are all free to play in, but houses a thriving microtransaction economy that Planet Michael will be part of that will donate to a charitable cause that has yet to be revealed, according to the publisher.

We're cautiously curious as to what these worldwide activities will entail, not to mention the "dozens of occupations" that we'll be able to purchase. We almost don't want to know.

"Entire continents will be created that will celebrate Michael's unique genius in a way that underscores his place as the greatest artist of all time," SEE Virtual Worlds claims.

"No artist unified the world like Michael Jackson, so it is fitting that in Planet Michael his fans will be able to join together in such a unique way online to celebrate his music, his artistry and his devotion to helping those in need," said John Branca, co-executor for The Estate of Michael Jackson. "Michael was always exploring creative new ways technology could enhance the experiences of his fans, and for that reason we are thrilled to be working with SEE Virtual Worlds to build a global interactive experience."

We most certainly don't want to know what technologies Michael was researching in his hay day. We'll just stick with one awesome Sega Genesis game and, now, a virtual planet in his honor.

Pet Society: Hideeni returns with moody fruit plushies, find them all for a prize!

The Great Hideeni has returned to Pet Society bringing brand new collectibles, and a new prize and, unsurprisingly, a brand new pink pineapple costume. Find him in your house, your friends' houses or in stores at random for the great Hide-and-Seeker to grant you a chance to give five of your friends one of 12 moody fruits.

Facebook games: Three new games you must play this week

Critter Island
Locking into the 11 spot this week, we have oddly-named Critter Island by LOLapps, a soothing island resort management game with around 970 thousand users and growing. You've been given an island property and your task is to turn it around into a profitable island destination. Tourists will begin flooding into your island as soon as a two-hour shift starts (similar to Restaurant City), demanding food, drink and entertainment, which you can fulfill by building attractions like bars, barbecue huts and mini golf courses. These properties will need to be restocked regularly to keep the goods going out to the customers.

Properties and decorations for your island cost either coins or Facebook, the former you'll by running a fine establishment. Another rating to keep track of is your popularity, which increase with the amount of decorations you add to your island. As goes with most games in this sub genre, if you build it, they will come. Visiting friends' islands lets you restock their properties with fresh goods for free and lei visitors, giving them enhanced tips for a short time. We know, it doesn't sound any more striking than other property management games, but there's an interesting catch.

Collecting stars that patrons drop along with their tips will triple your tip percentage for eight hours if you fill your star meter up. After eight hours, you'll have to fill the meter again to keep the tips flowing. The star catching feature will keep you hooked long enough to enjoy the game for a for 20-minute spurts while hopefully maintaining your interest in coming back for more tips.

The game is still in its early stages, allowing players to expand their island and later manage multiple islands. However, we don't have an idea in the slightest as to why this game is called "Critter Island." We'll go with the clientele.

Car Town

Car Town

Cie Games brings us Car Town, a car management and racing game that boasts over 4.3 million users in last place this week. After choosing your first from three entry-level, used cars, you can customize its body work down to the wheels. Just about every car in the game is a much cuter version of an existing vehicle, like my purple 2008 Toyota Yaris. The game features even more intense product placement, like the 2011 Honda CRX that's for sale within the game. Looks like branding is taking off.

In order to buy higher-grade cars and race in tougher competitions, you'll have to either work on your friends cars in your garage or win lots of races. Working on cars in your garage is the most surefire way to make some dough, requiring you to pick up the payment within the same amount of time the job took or you'll lose it (not for someone on my schedule). To increase the amount of jobs you can take on at once, you'll have to buy more lifts and hire more of your friends to help out. However, you'll still be restricted by the time limits, so pay attention! Honestly, this portion of the game is down right snore inducing, but racing is where Car Town will test your skills (and maintain interest).

Clicking on some cars that pass by your garage will open up the option to race them, which leads you to an mildly challenging mini game that requires precision to win. You can also challenge your friends and win 500 coins a race by selecting the "Challenges" tab above your friends panel. A third way to race is through missions that will open up by clicking on your car, complete these missions to increase your level and earn perks like free tests, which give you time with a car that can be yours if you win 25 races with it in one week. No pressure, huh?

Racing is simple enough to learn, but requires your attention if you want to stay on top and win the race. Each race consists of you shifting into first, second and third gear just as the needle touches the red portion of the meter in the center of the screen. The closer the needle to gets to the red without touching it, the faster you'll go. The final score tallies your reaction time to the green light and all three gears. Send your score to your friend and if he scores a time worse than yours, you'll get an easy 500 coins. While the garage management portion of the game is a bore, racing around in new cars, showing them off in car shows and bragging to your friends is what's going to keep you in Car Town.

Backyard Monsters

Backyard Monsters gameplay

Backyard Monsters from The Casual Collective is a game similar to last week's Monster World (with much prettier, isometric 3D visuals) in that you employ monsters to build up a piece of land, but that's about where the similarity stops. The game, which enjoys over 1.7 million users and sits in this week's 15 spot, asks players to build the ultimate monster backyard by putting tiny blue slimes to work.

These slimes will build your structures for you that gather resources (goo, twigs, pebbles and putty) used to build higher-grade buildings or defensive towers to protect your backyard from enemies. The game follows a logical progression of building similar to strategy games like Civilization. The game's paid resource, shiny, allows players to buy speed boosts and limited time protection items.

First, you'll need to build a Town Hall, the backbone of any monster's backyard. Then you'll have to build structures to gather resources like the Pebble Shiner and the Putty Squisher. Most importantly, you'll have to build defensive structures like the Sniper and Cannon Towers to fend off other players. Wait, this sounds familiar.

This game, much like Kingdoms of Camelot from last week, seems to host real-time, multiplayer combat. You're given two weeks time to build up your backyard with turrets and towers before the real game begins, so sit tight if you're interested in seeing what happens next. (Hint: Expect lots of monster blood.)

Restaurant City Halloween decorations continue with Week of the Living Dead

Restaurant City Week of the Living Dead
While you were out zapping ghouls and goblins into oblivion, Playfish added a plethora of new Halloween decorations to Restaurant City in what the studio calls the Week of the Living Dead. Aside from the awesome Lab Arcade Machine that nets you 200 coins every four hours, there are a few essentials to turn your eatery into a true zombie breakout zone.

First, you'll need the Mad Scientist (8 Playfish Cash), his Lab Equipment (10 Playfish Cash), Operating Table (12 Playfish Cash) and Lab Power Generator (10 Playfish Cash) if you want to create the zombie plague. But what would a zombie invasion be without celebrity zombies (you've all seen the recent Dawn of the Dead, right?) like Justin Brie for 10 Playfish Cash? When things get ugly, you'll want some serious wheels like the Zombie Defense Tank for 12,000 coins to truck through the legions of Zombie Nurses (10,000 coins) and Undead Cops (14,000 coins). But that's not even the half of it. Check out the Playfish Blog for a full list of the new decorations.

FrontierVille Trick or Treat Goals coming soon, mysterious Ghost Cannon appears

If you've been seeing the log-in screen pictured above for the past few days in FrontierVille, you'll be excited to hear that some details concerning the new Halloween-themed Goals and items have leaked. Titled "Trick or Treat," this new series of five Goals will take into the realm of the dead, clobbering the lost spirits of previously bludgeoned critters with the all new Ghost Cannon.

We imagine this item will operate just like the Varmint Cannon before, but with an ethereal twist. According to what's been leaked so far, these mission will unleash ghostly Bears, Foxes and Groundhogs upon your homestead. We've tried clobbering a slew of the varmints just now, but to no spiritual surprises. Stay tuned for when this new series of Goals finally goes live for everyone.

FrontierVille Halloween Mystery Crate coming soon with adorably vicious animals

Mystery Halloween Animals
Zynga has been waiting quite a while to roll out the big Halloween update in FrontierVille and this new Halloween Mystery Crate is a sign that it's almost here. For 50 Horseshoes, you'll have a chance at winning one of these three new critters in three colors:

    Raven: Purple, Teal and Black
    Bat: Black, White and Pink
    Rat: Brown, Gray and White

Chances are high that, like before, some of the more bland Mystery Animals from this collection will be available for individual purchase, but we're still in the dark on pricing. Unfortunately, this new Mystery Crate isn't live for everyone yet, but for you lucky few: enjoy your cutesy little rodents. Since it is Thursday, the new Halloween updates should go live for everyone by the end of the day. Stay tuned for updates when that time finally comes.

FrontierVille Headless Goals incoming, lose somebody's noggin this Halloween

FrontierVille Halloween is coming
HeadlessIt's clear that the folks at Zynga are intent on doing Halloween justice with yet another set of Goals in FrontierVille simply titled "Headless." Set to go live for everyone shortly, details on these unreleased missions are scarce, but what we do know is that they'll involve both the unreleased Ghost Cannon item and a new building, The Graveyard.

According to the leaked information, players will have to clear the way for their new Graveyard, blast someone or something with their new piece of spectral artillery, gather the remains and finally collect from their cemetery for the first time. We know that's mighty cryptic, but stay tuned for more details when these Goals finally make it into everyone's homestead.

While you wait impatiently, why not check our Halloween 2010 guide for FarmVille, Mafia Wars and more right here.

City of Wonder: "Like" a post and get a Forge!

Playdom launched a new fan-interaction element in City of Wonder today, asking users to visit the game's official Facebook fan page and "Like" a very particular post on the wall.

The wall post, as of this writing, can be found at the very top of the game's fan page, but here's a link for direct access. Starting today and ending on November 18, if 20,000 different Facebook users "Like" that post, then all users will receive a free Forge item.

The Forge is a military item, adding 38 Attack and 16 Defense points to your village. It normally costs 14,000 coins to build, along with requiring you to have researched Bronze Work, but one can be yours for free, if you simply help Playdom reach their required number of 20,000.

With a week to accomplish the task, we're sure that the Forge will be given away without trouble, but if you want to help ensure that that's the case, make sure to Like the post on your own account.

Market Street: Decorate your store for the Thanksgiving holiday

Playdom's store management sim Market Street has just released an update that includes some big updates. One huge new feature is storage, which allows you to keep your items that are not in use carefully tucked away for the future. You can access the storage feature by clicking on the Build Mode and then clicking the storage box in the lower left circular selection wheel. This will allow you to use the items to place them in your store.

In a more seasonal theme, there are now new Fall Harvest items available for purchase and for gifting. In the shop, you'll find a Fall Flower Wall for 15 Crowns and the Wall Tree Decal for 25 crowns. The gifts is where most of the fun comes in, with three new items available to send to friends. There is the Turkey Doll which is absolutely precious, the Giant Turkey Dinner, and the Pumpkin Pies. The latter two seem better fit for a baking or cooking themed game, but we'll take what we can get for Thanksgiving in Market Street.

Zoo World Thanksgiving Parade: Everything you need to know

Zoo World has put away the Halloween decorations and started a Thanksgiving festival unlike any other. Instead of just releasing fall decorations, the game has started a Thanksgiving parade by which you can collect animals and balloons for your zoo. It's a little bit confusing though, so we have all the details you need to maximize your animal profits during this turkey-related holiday festival. The event will end on December 9th, so there is plenty of time to play and collect animals.

To start interacting with the game, click the large turkey balloon outside your zoo. This will bring up the screen shown above that shows you your progress on blowing up a balloon. Currently, there are two animals available to receive through the parade, a Autumn Hound Dog and a Thanksgiving Pilgrim, but new animals will be available every 3 days.
To unlock each animal, you need a bunch of materials from a combination of sources. First off, you need giftable items. For the Hound Dog, you need 4 Indian Headdresses which are received from friends as gifts. You also need Pilgrim Hats and Batons, but those unlock on November 13th and 16th respectively. You can ask your friends for these, which generates a wall post that allows people to send you the gift if they want to.

Second, you need to collect items from feeding Thanksgiving treats to your animals. This means that when you click the hearts on your zoo enclosures, you should always feed the Thanksgiving treats. This will give you the chance of getting Maize, which you need five of for the first animal and you can collect five per day.

Third, you need to collect Drums which you and friends can share to your feed one time per day. For each feed, 10 friends can collect a drum. You can also purchase all of these items for 1 WLP each.

Zoo World Thanksgiving Parade

After you have collected all the materials, you still need friends in order to blow up your balloon. 5 friends have to click on your wall post to help you blow it up to allow it to be placed on your zoo. You also get the animals itself, and you can do each one of these over and over again to get as many animals as you can get. Note: you will only get one balloon per animal unlocked so while you may have 6 hounds you will only get 1 hound balloon.

Complete this each day and you will unlock a ton of different animals including a turkey and some other animals which we cannot determine at this time. We'll be sure to update you when new animals are available to acquire through the Thanksgiving Parade!

Zoo World releases festive Thanksgiving decor for the animals

Zoo World Thanksgiving decorations
Zoo World might have gone all out with the Thanksgiving Parade, but they're not being stingy with the additional Thanksgiving decorations for our zoos. There are also six new decorative items that will help match our adorable harvest themed animals that we get from the parade activity.

The Leaf Pile and Leaf Arch are a set of matching fall colored leaves that you can place anywhere on your zoo that could benefit from the color of autumn. These will cost you 50,000 and 100,000 Zoo Cash respectively. There is also the Autumn Plant and Autumn Centerpiece that are nice ways to bring some Thanksgiving cheer to your zoo. A Haystack is available, but don't put it too close to your animal pen or you might find that it's missing the next day. Finally, the Mayflower Boat costs 5 million Zoo cash, but is a large ship that is a replica of the original ship that the Pilgrims sailed in on.

The rest of the the Thanksgiving items are animals that can only be received from playing the Thanksgiving Parade.

New FarmVille Country Fair Items: Snow Cone Tree & Spotted Potbelly

Another round of the FarmVille Country Fair theme of limited edition items has hit the store this evening, with Zynga releasing one new animal and one new tree to the store.

The tree is the Snow Cone Tree, which would look perfect alongside the equally whimsical Cottoncandy Tree that will still be available for 5 days. That being said, you can add this colorful (and flavorful) new tree to your collection for 5 Farm Cash, or, if you're feeling generous, you can send one to a friend as a gift.

Meanwhile, for the pig collectors out there, you can now add a Spotted Potbelly pig to your Pig Pen, or just to your farm in general. Oddly, this pig's pattern looks to be more wavy than spotted, but we'll give Zynga the benefit of the doubt on this one. Either way, it will cost 18 Farm Cash to add to your farm, and, again, you can also send this item to a friend as a gift.

Both of these items will be available for the next 14 days, at which time they will leave the game, presumably for good (or at least until next year's Country Fair themed release).

Top 25 MySpace games of Dec. 2010: The land beyond Zynga's rule

Top 25 MySpace Games
Thanks to Inside Social, the results are in for this month's top MySpace games and the results would be shocking for anyone who doesn't normally game on the platform. Essentially, things over at MySpace could be known as the bizarro world of social gaming. In a land where MySpace is second fiddle to Facebook, so is Zynga to Playdom in a strangely mirroring way with its hit game Mafia Wars (13.4 million players) beat out by its direct competitor, Playdom's Mobsters (14.9 million players) by over one million players.

However, this list includes products that are more web apps than true social games like Tag Me from BitRhymes sitting in the number 5 spot with 8.4 million users. Though, web apps and games competing for the same audience is also common on Facebook with Phrases recently dethroning FarmVille as the top app in town. In fact, web apps are the majority on MySpace with 12 spots on this list including Bumper Stickers in the number 3 spot with 12.8 million users and Own Your Friends in fourth place with 10.3 million users.

Filling out the rest of this month's top MySpace games are a slew of pet care games such as SuperPoke Pets by Slide in ninth place with RockYou Pets tailing behind them in the 10 spot. Then rest of the list includes more obscure titles by Zynga and Playdom such as the former's Street Racing in the 13 spot and the latter's Bloodlines in 24th place. All in all, it shows that despite the power and insane growth of social games, social web apps can still give this relatively new genre of gaming a challenge.

Top 25 Facebook games of Dec. 2010: Digital Chocolate takes distant second place

The results are in from Inside Social's list of the top 25 Facebook games for Dec. 2010 and they're somewhat surprising given AppData's recent developer rankings. Zynga grips tightly to the top seven spots on the list including staples like FarmVille in first with 53.7 million monthly players, FrontierVille taking the third spot with nearly 30 million players and Mafia Wars in fourth sporting 21 million players a month. But just after Treasure Isle in sixth place comes Millionaire City, the newest game by Digital Chocolate, with 12.7 million players--808 thousand more than last month.

Millionaire City, if it keeps going at this rate, could easily knock CrowdStar out of tailing Zynga and Takeoff Monkey--the folks behind Phrases. Especially considering its top game, Happy Aquarium, is lagging behind in the 11 spot with 9.8 million players. However, Millionaire City's success does come with Zynga losing millions of users in all of its games aside from FrontierVille, where it gained 86 thousand.

The same goes for other top developers like CrowdStar and Playfish who each lost hundreds of thousands of players over the past month in games like the aforementioned Happy Aquarium, which lost 1.2 million players, and Pet Society that lost 118 thousand players last month.

Rounding out the list are a few gems like Car Town, a new game from Cie Games that gained 1.1 million players last month to bump it into the number 15 spot. And in the most massive gain this month, Funzio and its crime game hit Crime City took 18th place thanks to welcoming 3.5 million more players into its felony-filled walls.

You'll notice on this list that FarmVille's new arch nemesis, Phrases, is nowhere to be found. This is because Inside Social believes that the sheer number of new Facebook games that have popped up in recent months warrants their removal. (A good move, I'd say.) But what's this? According to AppData's most recent app leaderboards, Zynga and FarmVille are back on top as the most popular app on Facebook with 53.7 million players. Though, CrowdStar still has a long way to go--about 20 million more players--if it wants to send Takeoff Monkey and Phrases farther down the ladder. We know you got it in you, guys, now make it happen.

Treasure Isle: Superhero's Sub bonus quest unlocks the deep sea

Treasure Isle: You need a submarine chassis
You can tell from the World Map that the islands of Atlantis (along with the North Pole and the Egyptian Isles) are still off-limits to Treasure Isle players. But its promise is alive, and two indicators of that are the recent Nexus Relic (probably inspired by the Stargate Atlantis sci-fi series) and now, there's the Superhero's Sub, because a submarine's the best way to reach a sunken island city.
Treasure Isle Bonus Quest: Superhero's sub
To build the sub, you'll need five materials: Gold, Glass, Bolts, Diodes, and Metal. Afterwards, you'll need to recruit your crew, but they don't let you know what that entails until you complete the materials task. You can get the materials by posting a message to your Wall or buying each of them for 1 Island Cash. In total, constructing it should cost you 5 Island Cash, which is pretty cheap, all things considered. But the game indicates that this is for construction of the "Submarine Base", which means you might get another pop-up window asking for more supplies to build the actual sub itself. If that's true, this will suck. Either way, you've got roughly 12 days to find out, because after that, the quest will disappear.

CityVille Cheats & Tips: Getting Started Guide

Check out the rest of our CityVille Cheats & Tips right here.

It's time to set out on another adventure and travel to the far away lands of CityVille. Zynga's new city-building game puts you at the head of a small country town. After becoming mayor, you'll construct businesses, spread franchises, build homes, and even do a little farming. CityVille is full of great features, but this can often be a little overwhelming. Fortunately, our CityVille Cheats & Tips: Getting Started guide aims to help your city quickly develop into a budding metropolis.

Continue reading to check out our brief CityVille Cheats & Tips: Getting Started Guide to help you get started building your own city.

Getting Started
cityville cheats getting started guide
CityVille uses the standard XP, Coins, Cash, and Energy formula found in most Facebook games. You use up Energy doing tasks around your city, and you gain XP and Coins from completing these tasks. Get enough XP and you'll level up. Leveling up opens up new businesses, houses, decorations, and more for you to build in your city. Finally, Cash can be bought and is used to buy premium items, services, and to opt out of sending requests to your friends.

However, CityVille does mix things up by including Goods. Before you can collect Coin payments from your businesses, you must use Goods to stock up your store, so it's important to have a strong supply. Goods can be obtained through shipments and by harvesting crops (more on that later).
cityville cheats getting started guide

Houses & Community Buildings
In CityVille, you'll need to construct houses in order for your city to grow. Building houses will allow more people to move in, and allow you to collect more housing payments. However, your city has a maximum population limit, and as your city's population approaches the max, the citizens will get progressively unhappier.

To raise the maximum potential population, you have to build Community Buildings such as a City Hall or a Post Office. In addition to using up some Energy, these buildings require several of your friends to help by becoming employees. The alternate option is to pay 1 Cash per every position you need filled.
cityville cheats getting started guide
Businesses & Franchises
Constructing businesses is crucial to the prosperity of your CityVille City. Businesses, once unlocked, must be built and stocked before they can start making money.

A business can be turned into a franchise by building it your friends' towns. Once you have a chain going, you can build the franchise HQ in your own town and start collecting extra Coins. You are paid more based on the number of stores your franchise has opened. Collect your bonuses at the HQ.

Complete Goals & Collections
Like other popular Facebook games, CityVille is loaded with goals to complete. Completing goals rewards you with a variety of extra Coins, XP, Energy and other surprises. At the beginning, goals are often tasks that you would be doing anyways. So when getting started with CityVille, it's best to do everything based on what goals you currently have, to get those added rewards.
cityville cheats getting started guide
While in CityVille and working on your town, special items sometimes pop out of buildings. These items make up collections. Collect one of each of the five objects from the same set, and you can trade them in for XP, Energy, Coins and more.
cityville cheats getting started guide
Farming & Shipments
CityVille also allows you to work the land. Farming is one of the ways you'll be able to maintain a constant supply of Goods. Build farm plots on the land, plant seeds, and harvest crops to receive XP and precious Goods. As always, make sure to harvest those crops on time.
cityville cheats getting started guide
The other way to earn the Goods that stock your businesses, earn you coins, and keep your town running, is by using shipments. After getting started and completing various goals, you'll be allowed to make shipments with the train. Shipments either allow you to buy or sell Goods from neighboring towns. The larger the transaction, the longer the train will take to return. As you progress through the game, new modes of shipping will become available for even more ways to collect Goods.

Neighbors & Friends
In CityVille, to turn your town into an urban metropolis, you're going to need a horde of friends to help you. Friends can be used for almost every task. When visiting a neighboring town, you'll be able to harvest crops, water seeds, collect rent, and help local businesses. As mentioned above, you can also create franchises and send trains to your friends' cities.

Another great tip is to watch your friends' walls and your Facebook news feed. Your friends are bound to post notices to their walls offering free XP, Coins, and Energy which can be extremely valuable when getting started with CityVille.
cityville cheats getting started guide
The world of CityVille has a ton of features and they can be overwhelming at first. Keeping track of goods, opening franchises, and collecting rent, all on a limited Energy supply can be incredibly difficult. So although our CityVille Cheats & Tips: Getting Started Guide covered many of the basics, check out our CityVille Cheats & Tips: Energy Guide for even more detailed CityVille help.
